WWII begins



Task in preparation for our next class meeting on Friday

  1. Read Module 14 Lesson 1: Hitler's Lightning War
  2. Identify Key Terms and People (from page 520), do the "reading checks" on pages 521, 523, 524, 526, and 527. COmplete the "Lesson 1 Assessment" on page 527
  3. Watch How Hitler Invaded Half of Europe and take notes summarizing how that question is answered.  
  4. Watch The Sino-Japanese War: How did Japan Invade China in WWII and take notes summarizing how the question is answered (what were the long term and short term causes of the conflict)  
  5. Watch How/Why Germany invaded the USSR and take notes summarizing

Hitler's Germany and the roots of German aggression and the Holocaust

  1. Watch the documentary: "Heil Hitler: Confessions of a Hitler Youth" 
  2. Write a summary, in your own words, of the documentary and send it to Mr. Barros in an email. In your summary, be sure to mention what you found shocking, significant, and troubling. Why is it important to learn about this today?
  3. Start the WWII timeline and then choose one project from the project choices WWII Projects

  1. Read Module 13 Lesson 4 and answer questions in the study guide
  2. You may also wish to look over the power point "From Aggression to War" (to further expose you to the information relating to the reasons for WWII)  
  3. Watch the following mini-documentaries about the events leading up to the outbreak of WWII in Europe and in Asia) 
  4. Was Appeasement Justified? (Take notes on: What was it, why was it used, and in what ways were Germany and Italy appeased? At what point did France and the UK decide to finally stop any further appeasements?)
  5. World War II (Summary of the Deadliest Conflict in History) and World War II: Crash Course in History  (take notes summarizing the main events, interesting things you come across, etc.)

Understanding the differences between ideologies and actal government structures during the 20s and 30s (the Rise of Fascism and Totalitarianism)



SWBAT identify key differences between Marxism (pure Communism) and the governments that called themselves Communist (USSR, PRC, Ho Chi Minh, North Korea, etc.)
SWBAT idenfity key differences between Marxism (pure Communism) and Fascism and similarities/differences between Fascism and Bolshevik Totalitarianism


  1. Review "Marxism in a Nutshell"
  2. Identify the parts that are different from what you know about the USSR's government under Stalin (look back at Module 12)
  3. Watch the following short 5-10 minute documentaries and for each: write down five things that stood up to you. Write down one thing you didn't know before. Finally, summarize by explaining how your understanding of the differences between Communism, Socialism, Stalinism/Maoism, and Fascism has changed. Finally, make a chart listing the key components of each: Communism/Socialism, Fascism, Stalinism/Maoism

  3. On Friday, we will play Quizlet live  (Yes, there is a way to do it even though we are not in the same building. Hopefully it will work)
