Understanding the differences between ideologies and actal government structures during the 20s and 30s (the Rise of Fascism and Totalitarianism)



SWBAT identify key differences between Marxism (pure Communism) and the governments that called themselves Communist (USSR, PRC, Ho Chi Minh, North Korea, etc.)
SWBAT idenfity key differences between Marxism (pure Communism) and Fascism and similarities/differences between Fascism and Bolshevik Totalitarianism


  1. Review "Marxism in a Nutshell"
  2. Identify the parts that are different from what you know about the USSR's government under Stalin (look back at Module 12)
  3. Watch the following short 5-10 minute documentaries and for each: write down five things that stood up to you. Write down one thing you didn't know before. Finally, summarize by explaining how your understanding of the differences between Communism, Socialism, Stalinism/Maoism, and Fascism has changed. Finally, make a chart listing the key components of each: Communism/Socialism, Fascism, Stalinism/Maoism
